MT5 Expert Advisor · sizing and trade management

Draw the trade. It sizes it to your risk.

A TradingView-style long and short box on your MT5 chart. Drag your stop and target, and it sizes the trade so that if the stop is hit you lose exactly what you chose. Send the order from the same window, then manage the trade once you're in: move your stop to breakeven, trail it, or close part of the position.

Move the stop. Watch the size change.

This is the sum the tool does for you on every trade. Set an account and a risk, then drag the stop and the target: a wider stop means a smaller position, so the money at risk stays the same.

Illustrative chart and contract size. Drag the squares to move your stop and target, or use the keyboard: focus a square and press ↑ ↓.

Lot size = your risk ÷ what one lot loses at your stop, rounded down to 0.01, so you never risk more than you set. In MT5 the tool uses your broker's own contract size, tick value and account currency.

How you use it

From the box to the close, all on the chart

Real screenshots from MetaTrader 5. The toolbar sits in the top-left corner of the chart; drag it wherever suits you.

  1. 1

    Place the box

Click + Place at current and choose Buy or Sell: the box appears at the live price with the order window open. Or click + Place anywhere and draw it, on any candle, at any price. Drag up for a buy, down for a sell.

The toolbar: + Place at current, + Place anywhere, Settings and Manage trade, with a drop-down arrow on the right and an amber dot that means news is due soon.
  2. 2

    Set your stop and target

Drag the square on the red edge to your stop, where your idea is proven wrong, and the square on the green edge to your target. The lot size, risk and reward update as you drag. Drawn on past candles, the box replays against the real candles, like TradingView.

  3. 3

    Check it, then send it

The order window shows the entry, stop, target and lot size, and what you risk and stand to make. Change the size with the arrows or a quick-lot button if you want to. Nothing is sent until you click: Buy by Market at the live price, or a Buy/Sell Limit or Stop when your entry is away from the price.

The order window for a buy on XAUUSD: entry 4005.06, stop loss 4000.72 (−R99.54), take profit 4013.74 (+R199.08), volume 1.38 lots with arrows either side and Auto on, quick lots 0.10, 0.25 and 0.50, risk R99.54 · 1.00% of balance, reward R199.08 · R:R 2.00, and a blue Buy 1.38 by Market button.
  4. 4

    Manage the open trade

When the order fills, the Manage window opens. Move your stop or take it to breakeven, change or remove the target, switch on a trailing stop, or close 25%, 50%, 75% or all of the trade. Each button acts straight away, and your profit or loss is shown in money and in R.

The Manage window for an open buy of 1.38 lots on XAUUSD: entry 4005.06, now 4008.20, +R72.02 (+0.7R); stop 4000.72 with Set and Breakeven buttons, risk R99.54; target 4013.74 with Set; trailing stop On at 4.34 behind the price (= 1R); and Close part buttons for 25%, 50%, 75% and All.
  5. 5

    See today's news

Open the drop-down on the toolbar for today's economic news for your chart's currency: the time, the impact, the forecast and the result, and whether it came out good or bad for that currency. An amber dot tells you news is due within 30 minutes.

The toolbar's drop-down open: the risk setting line, then today's US news with times, impact dots, results, forecasts and previous figures, two marked good for USD or bad for USD, and the next releases counting down.
  6. 6

    Your risk, your way

In Settings, size each trade from your risk (a % of your balance or equity, or a fixed amount) or use a fixed lot size. Set your usual reward : risk, cap the size with a maximum leverage, and choose the lot-arrow step and your three quick lots. It remembers your settings on that computer.

The Settings window: Size 100%, lot size From risk or Fixed lots, risk per trade as % of account, risk 1.00% of balance (= R100.00 lost if the stop is hit), % taken of balance, reward : risk 2.00, max leverage 0, lot arrows 0.05, quick lots 0.10, 0.25 and 0.50, with Cancel and Save buttons.
How the lot size is worked out

Your risk ÷ what one lot loses at your stop

Rounded down to your broker's lot step, so you never risk more than your setting. That's why you'll often see 0.99% instead of 1.00%.

  • Uses MetaTrader's own calculator: your broker's contract size, tick value and account currency.
  • Market orders are sized from the price you'd actually get (the ask for a buy, the bid for a sell), so the spread is included.
  • If the smallest lot already risks more than your setting, it tells you in amber.
  • Not included, just as when you work it out by hand: slippage, overnight swap and commission.
After you trade

Every trade keeps its box

Pending orders

Keep their box with a dashed entry line until they fill.

Open trades

The box pins to your fill and shows your live P&L, and whether a trailing stop is on. Click it to manage the trade.

Your last closed trade

Keeps its box with the result: target hit or stop hit.

Trades you place yourself

Get a box too, and so do trades you opened with the MM Risk Tool. Trades from other Expert Advisors are left alone.

A log of every order and change

What it does

  • Works out the lot size for the stop and risk you choose.
  • Shows what you risk and stand to make before you send.
  • Sends the order you set up, when you click.
  • Moves your stop, trails it, or closes part or all of a trade, when you choose to.

What it doesn't

  • Choose your entries, stops or targets, or say whether a trade is a good idea.
  • Trade on its own, or touch trades from other Expert Advisors.
  • Forecast anything: a box replayed on past candles is hindsight, and the news list shows what came out, not what price will do.

MM Risk & Trade Manager FAQ

Questions about the tool

Already using the MM Risk Tool?
The MM Risk & Trade Manager is its new version: it does everything the MM Risk Tool does, plus trade management and today's news, and your subscription covers it. Download it from your account (or use the file we email you), put it in MQL5 → Experts and use it in place of the MM Risk Tool. Trades you opened with the MM Risk Tool get boxes in it too, so you can manage them. Set your risk once in its Settings.
Is it an indicator?
No, it's an Expert Advisor: a tool that can send orders for you, but only the ones you set up and click. Its file goes in MT5's MQL5 → Experts folder, and you'll find it under Expert Advisors in the Navigator.
Does it trade for me?
No. It never opens a trade on its own. It works out the size for the stop you choose and sends the order when you click one of its order buttons. In the Manage window, each button (move the stop, breakeven, close part or all) acts the moment you click it. The only thing it does by itself is move a trailing stop you've switched on, and only ever in your favour. Every decision to trade, and how much to risk, is yours.
Does the trailing stop work when MT5 is closed?
No. Your stop and target sit with your broker, so they work even when MT5 is closed, but the trailing stop is moved by the tool: leave MetaTrader 5 running with it on that symbol for as long as the trade is open. Each trade remembers its trailing setting if MT5 restarts.
How does the free trial work?
Start it at checkout with your MT5 account number: no payment. It runs for 7 days and we email you the tool and the installation guide straight away. When it ends the tool locks itself on your chart (your open trades are never touched, and a trailing stop you switched on keeps working) until you choose a plan. One trial per person and per MT5 account.
How do I pay, and when does it switch on?
Choose 1 month (R200) or 12 months (R1,750) and pay by EFT. As soon as we confirm your payment it switches on for your MT5 account by itself: if it's already installed, it unlocks at its next check. Renewing early adds the time on to your current end date, so you lose nothing.
Which brokers and accounts does it work with?
Any MT5 broker, live or demo, on any symbol and timeframe. The subscription is linked to one MT5 account number. It runs on MetaTrader 5 on a laptop or PC: Expert Advisors don't run on the MT5 phone app.
What does it send to your server?
When it starts, and every hour after that, it checks your subscription with our server. It sends your MT5 account number and your broker's server name, never your password, balance or trades. If our server can't be reached it keeps working for up to 72 hours.
Is the lot size exact?
It's worked out from MetaTrader's own calculator with your broker's contract size and tick value, and rounded down to the lot step, so you never risk more than your setting. It doesn't include slippage (in a fast market a stop can fill beyond its level), swap or commission. With Fixed lots it uses your number of lots instead, and shows what that risks at your stop.
Can I use it with another EA?
MT5 runs one Expert Advisor per chart. Open a second chart of the same symbol for the MM Risk & Trade Manager.

Trading carries a high level of risk and you can lose some or all of your capital. The MM Risk & Trade Manager helps you size, place and manage a trade, but it can't guarantee the result: in fast markets, around news or over weekend gaps, a stop can fill beyond its level and you can lose more than the box shows. Nothing it shows is financial advice. Risk disclosure.
